No... you don't have to do it that way.

The adapter fits on the back of the drive, allowing it to use a
standard narrow SCSI cable.

You can get those connectors for between $11 and $25 each, depending
heavily on where you get them.

I'm looking for older narrow drives too, but mainly because they
are going into a DEC Alphastation, which is very tight around the
drive bays and I could not get an SCA drive with adapter in there,
at least not in the lower bay.  The upper bay should be fine.

They really don't add much to the back, but I have under a half inch
of space in my system.
