I was also plagued with machine-checks (and other sorts
of failures) at least every other week ever since I got
this alpha PC164.

Different Kernels seemed to change the behavior, so I
thought it to be a software-problem, but in the end
it was a hardware defect.

A friendly Digital technician resoldered some pins of
a busdriver(?) and since then my machine is running
without even one reboot (61 days uptime).

I can understand your grief. It is really much better
to have a computer which you can trust to run even when
you're away for some days :)

I suggest, you consider HW-troubles, not only software.
