I may have a problem like this one. I have an noname that will boot quite
happly with 2.1.124 but I had problems with an RPM'd 2.1.133. Since
2.2.0pre4 was out I grabbed it and built the kernel from pristine sources.
I found that the krenel would crash just after it identified the fact that
I have an IDE cdrom.
First I modularized the IDE hd and cd code. The sysstem still hung so I
then added tha "hda=noprobe hdb=noprobe" options and the kernel booted.
