Well, I was told this several times, but I quote from my original post:

I did read the Changes file again, but I didn'd find anything that
helped
I tried to recompile the nfs server, but that didn't help
I can mount and access via nfs when I run rpc.mountd in a terminal (-F
option), which makes me believe it has something to do with logging (I
never see a message in /var/log/* concerning the nfs server)
The other message "mount version older than kernel" was generated by
amd, which also shows some weird behaviour besides this
(am-utils-6.0a16-4)
my configuration:
PWS 500 (Miata) with RH 5.2
gump:~% uname -a
Linux gump.ethz.ch 2.2.0-pre4-ac4 #6 Wed Jan 6 17:19:03 CET 1999 alpha
unknown
showmount --version
Universal NFS Server 2.2beta37
Thanks for your help
Alex
