I can use vi, not very well, but well enough to do what I need to. :-)

D'oh! But only in user space (not for the system).

A curious thing: THIS DOES NOT WORK with kernel 2.1.125 (hangs
irrevocably after "Freeing unused kernel memory: 48K freed"), but does
with the old 2.0.34 that was still sitting around. Is this a MILO issue
with development kernels in general, or just a temporary thing that has
since gone away? I'll see if it works with 2.2-pre6 (or 7) as soon as I
can...

Dumb little things like ^D to list possible completions and intelligent
completion with extensions. Definitely not worth this hardship.
