I had exactly the same experience - an author of aboot helped me. The
point is that your boot loader is too old as it was for me (RedHat 5.2
- upgraded from 5.1). Even though I had a new aboot package (0.5-7),
the boot loader was actually still old. This was fixed by reinstalling
the boot loader:
/sbin/swriteboot /dev/sda /boot/bootlx
