We have done this but not with alphas, although I have at various times
had all the pieces working independantly. The solution I would recomned is
to use squid to do the fornt end proxying and redirection. It has the
advantage that the load to serve up static pages is much lower than apache
and a  reasonalby fast server should be quite capable of proxying several
million hits a day.
