This is due to the way frame buffers detect the underlying hardware (they don't
on Alphas). You must define what graphics card you have and the resolution at
which you want to run the frame buffers. For example , on an SX with a Matrox
video card , the boot line should be something like : boot xdx:/vmlinux.gz
root=... video=matrox:vesa:<video mode> , where video mode is one of :
2,3,7 for 640*400 , or 0x10c (or 0x1c0 , I always forget this one) for the next
higher resolution. All modes are listed in the kernel documentation , under
Documentation/fb/ . You should use the text mode parameters and not the video
mode ones.
