hostname changes ?

sorry to bother with such a small problem, but....

    when i boot my redhat 5.2 system my hostname as reported by the bash 
prompt is localhost, but after a ppp connection and logout, the next time I 
login my host name is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where x is the dynamic ip address that 
my ISP set for my machine.... (this messes up gnome) so I tried a chmod 000 
/etc/HOSTNAME to no avail my hostname still changes after a ppp connection.

I would apreciate any pointers or help
