2.2.9 Instabilities

Hi all,
  Last night I compiled 2.2.7 and 2.2.8 - 2.2.7 and 2.2.8 seem
to be stable on my machine while 2.2.9 is not.  These were all compiled
under the same compiler set (RH6 standard dist).
I've also had a 2.2.9 compiled under an older distribution and it exhibited
the same problems.

Configuration is for an LX164 board, Tulip ether (not used in the stability
test
but configured), Adaptec SCSI (also tried with NCR53c7,8xx but Adaptec still
compiled in), SoundBlaster 16 (not used in test althouh drivers in) -
monolithic kernel.
