It is a map of addresses in kernel memory to names of routines; so that
when you do a 'ps' it can tell you which routine in the kernel things are
waiting for. There are probably other things it is used for but I haven't
figured
out what. (Other than kernel debugging of course).
If you really don't care about it (like I dont on my main machine), I just
delete /boot/System.map - then the warnings about versions disappear.
