raising kernel maximums

I have searched and searched for the answer to this one.
Even thumbed thru the kernel source...

How does one increase (change) the maximum stack and data sizes
for an Linux/Alpha kernel? Ditto for the corresponding defaults?

I see examples in the Kernel-HOWTO for changing some limits
by echo'ing values into /proc/sys/kernel, but nothing about
stack and data sizes.
