rh6 fresh install boot failure

I am having a head-to-wall banging experience with trying to boot Redhat 6
after a completed install. I have found that the vmlinux.gz file was
moved, I guess to the boot directory, but I can't figure out how to get
MILO to read files within a directory. I've managed to start the kernel
from floppy, but then I get a:

kernel panic: no init found, use init=..

type error message. I have successfully installed all RH5.x and
4.2 without this kind of message. I've never had to use init= before.
Here is my boot line:

boot fd0:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/sda2

What should I add? I've noticed that some of the HOWTOs in
the printed addendum are still horribly out of date, as the Alpha chip doc
doesn't seem to acknowledge any system based on the EV5 or higher.

I am using a relatively standard MIATA type system if that helps.

Thank you.
