Define "acceptable" - the Multia's sound card isn't the finest in the
world. It'll give you output that's usually acceptable for
non-critical listening.
I'd go with mpg123. If you want a GUI later, you can add in gqmpeg as
a front-end.
The patched mpg123 .59q that was mentioned here is mirrored on my ftp
site (orangesherbert.ces.clemson.edu), for those of you who have
trouble connecting to .ru sites - I've tried this on my Multia
and it works much better than the old .59o (and p, which I could never
get to compile quite right) ...
