Check out Rich Payne and gang's www.AlphaLinux.org  (God bless 'em!)

pretty much every thing you asked about is there.  take your time..  and if
i am not mistaken, most of the Carrera m/b's were either Aspens or Alpines.

the different HOWTO's for the various Alpha distributions will give you the
lowdown on installation.

to update the firmware, you'll need to positively verify which m/b is in
the system.  then go to ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/ to
find the firmware that corresponds to your machine.
