Some weeks ago I had the same problem with a Ruffian, but I found all these
mysterious files you need for booting and installing RH 5.2 on a ruffian
system... 

You can pick these files on the anonymous server of the research center I'm
working for. All you need is here....

ftp://geiser.jouy.inra.fr/incoming/saga/linux/alpha

I had to reinstall RH 5.2 because the NAG fortran libraries don't like glibc-2.1
at all :-( , and so my upgrade to RH 6 was a BIG mistake ;-)
