I don't have anything useful to say that would help
all this instability problems... but just a comment...

coming from the Linux/x86 world... I am amazed how
unstable the 2.2.x kernels have been lately for the
Alpha (specifically 2.2.{8,9,10})... 

personally, I'm still at 2.2.7 which seems the most
stable for my Miata so far.... all the later kernels
have caused some serious problems (sudden
reboots,sudden crashing of 14 processes, etc.)
