I've had problems with 2.2.9 on Intel. PCMCIA support wouldn't work,
X would crash on startup occasionally, etc -- so I moved back to
2.2.4, and everything is fine.
I'm going to grab a new kernel, crypto patches (www.kerneli.com) and
pcmcia drivers and compile the whole mess in a week or so -- hopefully
it will be a bit more stable.
