There could be various problems with PCI bus, which effectively limit
an amount of memory one can use _now_, but I strongly suspect that
this 2Gb limit came from a mixup with an Intel architecture.
Currently Linux on Intel really can handle, after some tweaks, up to
somewhat less than 2Gb of memory. There is some work going to on
to push that higher but it is unlikely that this will ever will be
"the first class memory" above that boundary. We will see. Once
again - this is x86 architectural issue.
If I am mistaken and there are some "hard" limits in that range on Alpha,
or other 64-bit architectures, then I really would like to know.
