I had a similar problem with the RH 5.2 distribution, but corrected
it (with advice from this list) by ensuring installation of ALL the *ftp* 
rpm's (after the initial setup).  Apparently there are some weird 
rpm's that must be installed.

In addition, I believe there is a security-related errata rpm at RH.
