I have a fire gl 1000 pro in my dec alpha works fine. using xfree86 3.3.5 and gnome with enlightenment.

perhaps a faulty card is the problem?? check to make sure the monitor cable is firmly connected...your symptoms kinda match that...or if you use a video connector box..ccheck that too...
