netatalk and redhat 6.0

Amid my vain attempts to get netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.oa18.2-oa1.alpha.rpm to
actually work, I came accross a ray of hope.

I put kernel 2.2.13 on my machine today with modular appletalk support.
Whola! The machine shows up to the appletalk network. but..... no users can
authenticate to the machine

any ideas?

PS when I try my account I get an I/O error of like 5205 on the mac side,
but with all other accounts I get invalid account/ disabled acount/ wrong
password error messages
(this is on a G3 MAC on the network here)
the account can log in fine via telnet
