glibc update from 2.0 to 2.1

I have a PC164 with RedHat 5.2 and glibc 2.0.7. I would like to upgrade
my glibc to 2.1 so that I can install more recent RPMS that people
build. However, I don't want to upgrade everything (at least, not all
at once) so really I just want to upgrade glibc now, and the other parts
of my system one at a time over the coming months.
So the question is, do glibc2.0 and glibc2.1 coexist properly, and/or
is this upgrade a safe thing to do?
Anybody tried this sort of thing? Experiences?
