Try not using a RAMdisk floppy at all, via (assuming SCSI CD):
>>> boot dva0 -file vmlinux.gz -flags "root=/dev/scd0"
Oh, and I think the generic kernel on RH 6.0 will not work correctly
on the ES40. Try the generic-up-223.img on gatekeeper.dec.com at:
/pub/DEC/Linux-Alpha/Images/
