Tru64 is shipped with minimal development tools for the purpose
of re-linking the kernel as I recall; the compilers (f77/f95, C++)
and development tools require a license. Maddog Hall tried for
years - literally - to bundle a suite of GNU tools with Digital
Unix, but was unable to come up with a license agreeable to both
parties (Digital and RMS). The Tru64 5.0 systems I use come with
bash and a couple assorted gnu utils.

My AS200 4/233 with 128MB ram handled Digital Unix 4.0D admirably, and
now runs Linux quite well. I think you'll find that "true blue" DEC
hardware is easier to work with than clones.
