Agreed. Even better if you can program in Lisp a tiny bit;
although a lot of things can be done with provided tools.
But it is fairly minimal so not for folks with baroque tastes.

ICEwm is another interesting option and there are other managers
which would cooperate nicely with Gnome - including Window Maker
which is included in RH6.1. Enlightenment is very far from the
end of the world.
