Ensoniq AudioPCI problems on AlphaServer 3300

Has anyone had success with a Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card on
Alphas? My AS 3300 detected it fine in RH6.1 & kernel 2.2.13, and it
shows up in the modules list. sndconfig detects it but when it sends the
digital audio to it, it plays the audio in an endless loop and hangs the
system
hard and I have to reboot. 

Is there a workaround for this?
