I believe /sbin/init is dynamically linked (don't have access at the
moment) so the panic could certainly be a glibc problem.

I don't see an alternative but to boot a rescue disk, mount root and
look around for the problem.  That's not really for the faint of
heart... you have a very limited toolset on the rescue disk.

If you have a free partition, another approach is to install Red Hat to
an empty partition, boot and mount your original root to find the
problem.

When testing a new glibc, I never overwrite those in /lib until I am
confident they will work.  Also, keep a rescue disk handy and learn how
to mount root.  That might save you some pain later on.
