dearth of software...

After packing my 21164 into a box 6 months ago, I'm finally moved, unpacked, and sitting with 99.5% idle time. However, I just can't find the kind of software I want to run.

So - are there any free MP3 compression programs out there? I've spent a morning searching, and all I've found are archives from 1999 with people saying "Lame compiles and works for me", or non-Alpha vrsions, but no live links to Alpha binaries or source? I've tried all the other popular distribution sites too.
