Hmm.. I actually recommend lame over my encoder. I haven't done anything
on it for quite some time whereas the lame team have done a lot of work on
their encoder, particually regarding sound quality.

I don't know if the source compiles directly on linux-alpha, but I know
there is source that works on alpha for NetBSD in their pkgsrc.
For patches, check out:
ftp.netbsd.org:/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-current/pkgsrc/audio/lame/patches
These are currently for lame version 3.50, though.
