Did you try setting up some module options in /etc/conf.modules ?
conf.modules should look something like this:
<snip>
alias eth0 3c509
options eth0 io=0x300h irq=10
<snip>
take a look in the kernel docs for what the real module options are. It's
been a while since I used this kind of card, but those should be close to
the right options (you may only need the io address too).
