I've had no problems with stability using KDE and GNOME on different
boxes. All my machines have sound working and various video hardware,
and still no instabilities. In any case, I think KDE runs a little
lighter on Alpha's. Not as much memory use it seems, and faster
interactivity in X, probably due to the bloated window manager
(Enlightement) in GNOME. Use sawmill (now sawfish) with RH6.2 instead
and you'll notice a big improvement in speed.

Not a clue which one is more popular. KDE is plain broken. It has a
built-in ability to what it looks like to crash a video hardware (yes,
this seems to be not an X server but on a lower level). After this will
happen you will have no keyboard and no mouse although a network
connection, if exists, still should be good enough to login and reboot
(you will have hurry before this opportunity will die too).
Removing "Gnome" entry from KDE menus will change the situation from
"on demand" to "random, with no apparent reason".
NOT using Enlightement window manager with Gnome is a very fine idea. :-)
I did not try Helix latest stuff yet.
