have a look at blackbox. its a good simple window manager. i would say that
it is very much up and coming. written completely from scratch. you can
integrate some of the kde stuff in. small code base, COMPLETELY
configurable. mostly icccm compliant. uses its own graphic handler. its
worth a look.
