The problem you describe was one which plagued the Matrox Driver in X a
few years ago but has been fixed for ages.

The easy fix if I remmber correctly is to specify the amount of RAM on the
video card in your /etc/xf86config rather than letting it autodetect which
remvoed (reduced?) the problem.

The slightly harder fix is to upgrade to a newer version of X - that
should do the trick.
