Does this just happen with some mp3's or with all of them? This happens to me with some mp3's with mpg123, I just assumed that they use some kind of unsupported compression method or something that mpg123 doesn't understand that xmms does. If they play fine with xmms but not mpg123, it's easy enough to whip together a command line program which will do nothing more than load XMMS' input/output mp3 plugins and play through those, I've done this.
