This Jensen I've installed on is a known flaky
machine. Now that I've got Linux installed, though,
I'm hoping I can diagnose the problem more easily.
Here are the symptoms:
I'll be working along and suddenly *BLINK* I'm at the
console. No warning whatsoever. That's most common
scenario. I've also seen a couple signal 11's, but
they were both during early install attempts. That
may be another issue entirely.
About 10 seconds before the most recent crash I saw
the words "Machine check" flash on my screen. I see
the same thing at the end of /var/log/messages. No
related information follows or precedes this message.
Looking through the kernel source, I see a
sys_jensen.c file with a function called
"jensen_machine_check" that does a printk(KERN_CRIT
"Machine check") (typing from memory).
Going through the mail archives, I see previous
discussions of "machine checks" and people asking
"what vector". This func doesn't print a vector, but
it is getting passed one.
SOOOO, my question is: Should I modify that func to
print the vector so I can track down the fault
hardware(?) or does someone already know what this is?
Also, if I can't get though a kernel compile without
crashing, what can I do? Oh yeah, and does the kernel
source supplied on the RedHat 6.0 CD have everything I
need to make a bootable JENSEN image?
