If the existing indexes are nuked the fontserver will report no fonts
found.
Once you're up and running you can use xlsfonts or gfontsel to see what
fonts are being served. So for example. If you where to setup the font
descriptors for /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 for the first time you
would...
mkfontdir -e /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
cp mkfontdir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/fonts.dir \
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/fonts.scale
Aslong as the path to the fonts are correct they should be recognized
just fine.

I could convert my ttf fonts to ps... Don't see the advantage know that
I've tweaked my font settings so. I know a great source of PS fonts is
your nearest commercial *nix like Solaris and Tru64, OS/2 has alot of
nice PS fonts too.
