  funny this is coming up now,
  i gave up using X and pulled my nic (a kingston)
about a year ago
  bcs of exactly these symptoms.
  and that pc164 was running 6.1 with updates.
  i finally ran all the current updates and now it's
stable again
  go figure
  this is RH6.1 with all the 6.2 updates
  i'm happy to have X back

  but now i can't talk to sendmail on the localhost
  fetchmail is giving error 10
  maybe it's time to move to different server software
?
  like postfix ?
