I can not be of much help myself, I'd suggest two things -
1) get "scu" utility from http://www.bit-net.com/~rmiller/scu.html
(The only utility for AlphaLinux AFAIK) and try with debug
mode on to see what's going on.
2) ask in storage/scsi newsgroups, someone over there may
have a better idea/experience.
