The XM-6302B is the problem. It can recognize CD-RW discs & takes some time to
distinguish the cdrom type inserted in the drive. Linux does not give it
enough time before deciding the drive does not exist. I ran into this on an
164SX, changed the drive & things work fine. Too bad as I had hoped to put the
iso images on CD-RW rather than CDR. TRU64 had to patch the boot loader to
accommodate this drive. Maybe Linux can get a patch too, but I'm not in the
league of those who can fix it.
Try the older generation XM (5702 or 5701 not sure - one is scsi & the other
is ide).
