Re: OT: tape backup

With regards to your message at 10:43 AM 3/25/01, James Fowler. Where you stated:
Based on my recent experiences, I want a more robust backup solution. I
am looking to aquire a tape drive. As this is not being payed for by a
buisness I need a cost effective solution. I prefer SCSI (I am using the
Qlogic isp1020 as reported by /proc/scsi). Any suggestions or ideas?
What is the best drive for the money? I will be backing up FAT32, EXT2,
Reiserfs, UFS, HPFS, (and maybe other) filesystems. I would like to
manage it all on my alpha, although I can put it in a x86 box that I have
if necessary (cost/performance driven, etc.). My apologies for the two OT
posts in one weekend. Thanks for your help.
James

I would have to say the Ecrix VXA1 is by far the best "bang for the buck"
Tapes are 33/66GB capacity. It is variable speed, so unlike DAT and Exabyte it does not go back and forth during operation ("shoe-shining").
They seem quite reliable, as we have sold many ( over 100) and have had only 1 fail in the last 18 months.
Interface is SCSI LVD.
There are no special drivers needed, as it acts as a "standard" SCSI tape device.
Cost is good too, as the internal kit, with a tape and a cleaner, sells for $769
