RE: installing rh 7.0

Did you burn this CD yourself from an ISO, Did you use CD-R media. It
appears your CD may be bad. If aboot can be read in off the CD and
execute, but then fails to read in the kernel.

1. aboot does not support your CD? (not likely)
2. Bad media

The workaround for 1 is use floppies
the fix for 2 is new media, reburn, make sure you use CD-R media..
NOTE.. I say CD-R because some older CD drives on Alphas cannot read CD-RW
reliably, it's less painful to just use CD-R for everything, than try to
figure out which one can read CD-RW's

	Well this is were the trouble starts. His aboot fails while
loading the kernel. It is in disk.c where load_kernel(void) fails. It is
the following which produces the error:

	printf("aboot: booting from device '%s'\n", envval);
	dev = cons_open(envval);
	if (dev < 0) {
		printf("aboot: unable to open boot device `%s': %lx\n",
		       envval, dev);
		return -1;
	}

cons_open comes from cons.c. It is rather short:
	long
	cons_open(const char *devname)
	{
		return dispatch(CCB_OPEN, devname, strlen(devname));
	}

CCB_OPEN is defined in /linux/include/asm-alpha/console.h

	#define CCB_OPEN                0x10
	[...]
	extern long callback_open(const char *device, long length);

The code comes from linux/arch/alpha/lib/callback_srm.S.
At this point it really shows that I am way out of my league. I do
recognise assembler when I see it, but that's about it.
	Sorry Claes, but I won't be of any help to you, maybe the advise
to try the boot floppies can help you. Or you could try an scsi cdrom
drive.

Sorry and ahoi
