In my experience if you do the above you will not get on screen any
output until some getty runs and you are seeing a login prompt.  Logs
are not accessible until you login so if something got stuck earlier you
have a bit of a problem.  Therefore if only your SRM redirects, in an
absence of a keyboard/video, to a serial port automatically (at least
some versions are doing that) it is much preferable NOT to do
'console=ttyS0' unless you _really_ have to.  Checking SRM variables and
setting output explicitely to 'serial', instead of 'graphics', would be
the first thing I would try if "an automatic method" would not work.

If you have to tell the above your kernel explicitely, and you are
obviously running a getty process on that port, then do not forget to
edit /etc/securetty or root will have some troubles with loging on this
console. :-)
