  All console messages will be printed on serial console
  during boot, but I can't feed anything to it; this is
  not so good behaviour if fsck/rc.sysinit says:

       *** An error occurred during the file system check.
       *** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
       *** when you leave the shell.
       Give root password for maintenance
       (or type Control-D for normal startup): 

  So I can't type password Ctrl-D or anything else.

  I think that console worked with kernel 2.2.17 (??)
  but not anymore with 2.4.8
