The announcement by Compaq on the end of production of Alphas
by 2003 has created a lot of misconception. People have taken it
to mean the end of Alphas systems all together right now.
Kodak RSI has announced the end of support on Alphas on their
graphical display product IDL. Likewise, one of our regular system suppliers
has also removed the storage and peripherals items
for Alphas from their on-line catalogue.
When I first started using Redhat (Linux), I understood
one main attraction of this operating system, apart
being free, was to revitalise obsolete PCs (pre i286 stuffs).
So why a different view is taken on Alphas, especially when
the Alpha systems are much resilient and hence longer life
than most PCs?

Sad... I run also Mandrake on one of my Intel boxes. Maybe the Mandrake team
is willing to take over and maintain the Alpha release? Mandrake is close to
RH anyway (they use rpm's etc.). I have only a lowly 266XL but it is a
reliable box and speed is good enough for my applications. I would rather
keep it up to date.

mmmm.. does that mean their(RedHat) axp lists will go away now also,
since compaq is dropping the Alpha in 2.2 years.. Guess we will have to
all move to Debian.. Just think of all the Alpha's us hobbyist's will
be able to get a hold of.... I'd love a ES45 :^)

Probably not too many folks left at compaq/digital to pre-test the
alpha/linux port.
i wonder also if the 'C' compiler is also in jeopardy, as redhat bought
out one of the software groups that dwelled in alpha compiler
issues/optimizations.
i guess the concept of hobbyist linux doesn't work anymore for redhat.
