MANY things changed between 6.2 and 7.1, the most prominent being the
kernel - 2.2.17(?) vs 2.4.3.
And the first thing you mentioned above, that builtin QLogic SCSI
controller, has been problematic even under the 2.2 kernels. I've
test-installed 7.1 in an AS500, which also has one of those QLogics
built in, and the driver for it just does not behave as well in 2.4 as
it did in 2.2. No idea why, just the facts.
One solution I've used is to move the CDROM drive off the bus with the
harddisks - ie put in a old NCR810 controller, or even another QLogic,
just to handle the CDROM. This has worked well on a couple of
QLogic-based systems. For some reason, termination or speed or
something, having only HDDs or only the CDROM on the bus is OK.
Another solution is to use a different driver - some folks (hi Matt :-)
suggest substituting the BSD-originated driver you can find at (IIRC):
