can Mozilla use Java2?

Is there a way to get Mozilla to use an appropriate Java2 JRE?
When I try to use Mozilla to view some pages that cause Netscape
to blow up, it goes through a long process to download an X86
JRE zip file, then it tells me the installation failed and I
should download a JRE for Losedows. (oops)
I have Compaq's JDK 1.3.1 on the machine. Is there a way to
tell Mozilla to use it? Or, is there a way to get Mozilla to
get and/or use an appropriate JRE?
Thanks.
