Please excuse this suggestion if it is too elementary or does
not apply.

If you have access to an RPM, the .spec file will contain the
command to compile the program.  At least that's what I found
out when I manually recompiled the xlockmore package to add the
-mieee switch to keep it from blowing up with a floating point
exception.  My first, straight, compilation would never see the
password as being correct--oops.  After looking in the .spec
file, I found that the patch files _do_ have to be applied, and
there are a bunch of options that need to be passed to "make".
