My 50a had the same problem. What it ended up was he CDrom drive is a
little flaky, and theRed Hat CDs are not the world's best.  Plus my
floppy drive was not "reading" either. 

Iended up running the compter about 24 hours straight to warm up the
floppy contrller (i guess), the swapping out th CDrom drive for a
junker.

That did the trick. I plan to get a SCSI CDrom .. but the mai thiing is
to cure the case f VX1s thati got.  And replacethe battery.. it is
REALLY buried!
