[Fwd: RH Linux 7.1 on DPW 433au]/follow-up

Feb 6 02

To the List:

Today the VX1 shakes are gone! I can type!

To follow up, my 500a had exactly the same Toshiba 24x CDrom unit and
was giving me exactly the same message

>>> failed to open dka0.0.0.4.0

no matter what combo of boot files and boot flags I used. The Jumpstart
CD worked fine, and I got a clean install of Digital Unix on another HD,
but no luck with RedHat 7.1.

The break came when Jay Estabrook suggested I use the Digital Unix to
check on the drives and media. I did a

more cdrom0a

in the /devices/rdisk
directory

and was able to read the raw code on some CDs, but not on others. The
same method on "floppy0a" got me a

"fd1 internaldriver error"

msg.

Based on that, I tried "burning in" the floppy controller, and I
replaced the CDrom drive with a junk unit, an old Mitsumi out of a dead
P1.

Got a clean RedHat install off floppies the first try.

But changing to the Mitsumi drive caused my Digital Unix to fail to
boot!

How about that?
